We got up early this morning and headed to Glacier National for a day of sight seeing along the "Road to the Sun". To say it was "spectacular" is an understatement. It became all the more interesting because much of it is under construction and long stretches of it are dirt (aka mud from the melting snow). The weather was warm and it seemed strange to be riding through snow fields with just a light shirt on. Along the way we had many photo ops, which are in the gallery, and saw numerous wildlife. We had to stop for a couple of mountain goats that were grazing in the middle of the road and were amazed when they jumped over the embankment and ran along side of us on what was an extremely steep slope. Later in the day a mule deer paid us a visit as we were enjoying our lunch at a roadside stop. All in all a spectacular day in a park I've been dreaming about my whole life. From there we headed to Kalispell and found a campsite with absolutely no amenities except for a pristine lake.
We left out of Marion Montana after spending a night in a primitive campsite. No lights, no power, no running water and one of the prettiest lakes I've ever seen. Only a few other campers were in the site and it was very peaceful. That is until the mosquitoes discovered us and came in for a feast. I think the mosquito is the state bird of Montana.
The temperature when we left was in the mid-40's so it was full leather and full helmets and gauntlet gloves. Even with that we were really cold riding through the mountain passes and deep valleys. By the time we got to Libby, Montana it was time for hot coffee and breakfast which we had in McDonald's.
From there we started out for Sandpoint, Idaho where we will meet up with Don Gentry and the other riders from SSMC later this afternoon. For now Jim and I are going to ride down to Coeur d'Alene to see if it's as beautiful as I've heard.
Photos will be added later tonight or at oh dark ugly tomorrow. My body is still on Eastern Time so I'm up long before sunrise.
